Forrest Gump

 8. Forrest Gump

"Life is like a box of chocolates"

"Stupid is as stupid does"

"Run Forrest, run!"

"My name's Forrest, Forrest Gump"

So many memorable quotes in one film, maybe that's why it's one of the most well-know and favored movies of all time.

Forrest Gump really stands out as one of the most classic films of the 90's even though it was set in the 60's, 70's and 80's, but hey!

I remember watching it for the first time. It had just come out on video, and my whole family sat down to watch it; mum, dad, the sisters and me. The folks had seen it at the movies and loved it, so on a Sunday night, we gathered in the living room to watch it. That's something I miss about being younger, when everyone was still at home.

Watching it, it felt like it went for months and months, as it covered such a large time span and at times I had trouble trying to remember everything about it.

Nearly twenty years on, I now regard it as one of my favourite films and one that I'll watch maybe once a year or every two years, just to remind myself what life's all about. Forrest Gump has inspired me, and that may sound silly to some of you out there, but it proved that anyone can do anything, if you let your heart take you there.

About ten years ago I purchased the soundtrack, which if I'm correct still sells copies today nearly two decades later. Its' jammed full of American Classics, that really captured the era of the story and my absolute favourite song on the 2-Disc Album, which is also one of my favourite songs period, is "Against the Wind" by Bob Seeger. The musical score to the film itself is beautifully made, and soars to some real emotional heights.

You would probably have to have been living under a rock to have not seen or heard of Forrest Gump, so I'll assume that I can skip talking about the plot. I do believe though, it is one of those rare films that means something different to everybody who watches it. Maybe you relate to Forrest, maybe you don't, but the turbulent times he goes through, the experiences he has and the characters who come into his life are all something that each of us can choose one of and refer to when thinking of this special movie.

Just when I think about it I smile, at moments like when he is a boy and he's being chased down his driveway by the bullies on their bikes. The braces on his legs come loose, his legs are free and he runs like lightning, making his escape. Or there's the moment at the Memorial Pool in
Washington D.C., when he addresses a crowd of thousands, who can't hear a word he says because the microphone isn't working. The crowd falls silent, and then the love of his life, Jenny, appears from the crowd, the two meet in the shallow water and hug, with the whole crowd cheering for them. Then there is the time when Lieutenant Dan comes to visit Forrest, keeping up his end of the bargain if Forrest ever actually became a Shrimpin' Boat Captain. Forrest sees him on the dock, casually jumps from his vessel and swims over to greet his former army cohort. In the background, the boat crashes into an empty dock and Forrest simply says "That's my boat".

How long has it been since you spent some time with Forrest Gump?
